There is a conviction that professionals (e.g. doctors, nurses and teachers) should be given higher priority over practitioners in other less important fields, such as sports and entertainment industry. However, such a view looks simplistic to me to associate salaries solely with the social value of a specific job.
There are reasons to why some people tend to say that professionals in medical and educational field should earn higher salaries than athletes or actors. Indeed, medical workers do play a key role in saving people’s lives. One convincing example can be seen in the recent pandemic of Covid 19: had it not been for their struggle, millions of more patients would have lost their lives; so are teachers, whose proficiency is indispensable for the cultivation of future educated talents needed by various industries. On the contrary, athletes and actors do not have much of a role to play in these aspects.
Even professional workers play a more practical role than those dealing with sports or entertainment, it doesn’t necessarily lead to higher payment of the former. Those championing the assumption in question are oblivious to the irrelevant connection between the social implications of occupations and salaries – in the real business world, how much workers deserve doesn’t exclusively hinge on their relevance to society; rather, workers’ salaries depend more on the revenue they generated for employers. In this respect, I would say that those celebrities on sports fields or on stages may deserve better economic return, subject to their business value in terms of advertising.
From what has been discussed, it is my conclusion therefore, it is unreasonable to associate workers’ salaries with their social significance, while the discussion should also take into account their business value.
