It is sometimes argued that senior school children can study a number of subjects and gain knowledge. I believe that children should receive a rounded education, instead of focusing on several subjects only.
Some people support a broad general education because children can develop a variety of qualities which contribute to their future success. If these children have to study various subjects at a time, they can develop time management skills gradually. They also improve the ability to work in teams when producing works of art with peers in arts classes and doing group sports in PE. These skills and abilities are important to them when they continue their studies or handle problems of adult life. In contrast, it might be difficult for them to acquire such skills, if they study some core subjects such as maths only.
On the other hand, students may be more likely to achieve success, if they focus their minds on several subjects only. They do not have to devote time to attending different courses, doing homework of different subjects and preparing for numerous exams. For example, students who intend to practice medicine in the future may spend more time on chemistry, while those who prefer to find employment in engineering can pay closer attention to maths and physics. They can develop expertise and earn higher salaries. In contrast, those who study a great variety of subjects might end up doing some low-paid entry-level jobs.
In my view, studying different subjects is a better option, allowing students to choose their career path more easily. They are not aware of their talents and strengths from an early age, and the experience in different disciplines can help them choose some subjects on which they can spend their whole working lives until they can achieve potential. Some students might not realise that they have artistic talents and can pursue a profession in the design industry, if they did not study the arts. So I strongly believe that students should be exposed to different fields of knowledge.
